DURHAM – Gladys Odean Davis Lowe Ribet, age 97, died at Carolina Point in Durham, NC on October 28, 2021. She was born on May 29, 1924, in Person County, to the late Potter Davis and Ada Clayton Davis as the last of 10 children. Gladys is survived by her son, James McLendon Lowe (Carol) and daughter, Fayedean Lowe Spencer (Wayne). Gladys was preceded in death by her late husband, David McLendon “Mac” Lowe, second husband, John A. Ribet, son David Wayne Lowe, and grandson James McLendon Lowe, II . Gladys is also survived by granddaughters Melissa Lowery (Tim), Amy Jacobs (Everette), Deborah Hempel, Jamie Lowe (Chance Crowder) 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Gladys was a long-time resident of Lowes Grove Community and a devoted member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church. She was very involved with her Sunday school group, the Light Bearers, and occasionally sang in the choir. She retired from the American Tobacco Company in 1986 after 43 years of service. Gladys also enjoyed directing weddings and was a loyal member of the Lowe’s Grove American Legion Auxiliary Post 416 where she served as President and various other offices. She loved to travel and was always proud to say she had visited all 50 states.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at 11 AM in Lowes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Woody Freeze officiating. Pallbearers for the service will include Jimmy Adams, Gary Olive, Danny Davis, Josh Lowery, David Lowe and Everette Jacobs.
Family and friends are welcome to visit after the service in the fellowship hall. Lunch will be provided.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lowes Grove Baptist Church, 4430 South Alston Avenue, Durham, NC 27713, in her honor.
