Gerard John Hyland, Jr.

DURHAM – Gerard J. Hyland, Jr. (Jerry), age 81, died January 8, 2024 at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. He was born October 9, 1942 to the late Gerard J. Hyland, Sr. and Mary E. Hennigan.

Jerry was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Central High School in 1961 (Scranton, PA) and enlisted in the Army January 3, 1962, serving in the 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Jerry attended Officer Candidate School and earned the rank of Second Lieutenant August 29, 1964. He subsequently attained the rank of First Lieutenant and was honorably discharged from the Army November 10, 1969.

Nine months after enlisting in the Army, Jerry began taking classes at the University of Scranton (Scranton, PA) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1967.

Jerry and his wife, Barbara J. Hyland, were married in St. Clare Church (Scranton, PA) March 9, 1968. After working for a handful of places, including C. Fehrenbach & Co., Inc., Jerry made his career with the P. H. Glatfelter Company (Spring Grove, PA). He began in January 1973 and worked there for nearly 30 years before retiring in June 2002.

Jerry is survived by his son, Gerard J. Hyland, III, his daughter, Elizabeth A. Hyland (David Carlin), his younger sisters, M. Judy Fongemie (Maurice) and Margaret L. Bailey (Michael), and his younger brothers, Bernard V. Hyland (Maryvictoria Pyne) and J. Jay Hyland (Louise). Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Gerard J. and Mary E. Hyland, and by his wife, Barbara J. Hyland.

A private funeral mass is being held at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Durham, North Carolina.
