George Kakalec, 86, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at his home in Durham. He was born October 2, 1918, in Janesville, Pennsylvania, and grew up in McAdoo, His was the fourth of thirteen children of the late Peter and Mary Kakalec. Mr. Kakalec was a medic in the U.S. Army, 3rd Army, 80th Infantry, during World War II. He served across Europe from Normandy to neemberg. He was a career federal employee with the U.S. Veterans Administration in Washington, DC, and retired to Durham in 1987. Mr. Kakalec was a founding member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Church in Cary. Mr. Kakalec is survived by his wife of fifty-seveneears Jenee Teal Kakalec and son James both of Durham. He is also survived by brothers John Kakalec and wife Juanita, Chapel Hill; Rev. Joseph Kakalec, SJ, Scranton, PA; Michael Kakalec and wife Margot, Morgan Hill, CA; Eugene Kakalec and wife Liz, Baltimore, MD; sister Helen Sorrentino, Lakewood, NJ; sister-in-law Barbara Kakalec, Rockaway, NJ; brother-in-law Edward Ruitberg, Seattle, WA; brother- and sister-in-law Charlie and Peggy Brewer, Durham; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded ineeath by sisters Anna, Margaret, Mary, Betty and brothers Peter, Nicholas, and Robert. Viewing will be Tuesday, May 10, from 7-9 p.m .with the Parastas service at 8:30 pm at Hall & Wynne Funeral Home, 1113 Main St., Durham Funeral and Divine Liturgy, Wednesday, May 11 at 10 a.m., Saints. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Church, 2510 Piney Plains Rd., Cary. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Durham.
