Durham

Frances D Newman, better known to many as Fran, age 93 passed away September 23, 2024. Ms. Newman was born on February 26, 1931 to the late Graham Daniels and Ruth W Daniels in the Cedar Grove, North Carolina community North of Hillsborough. Ms. Newman was preceded in death by her husband Charles Newman. Fran graduated from Aycock High School in Cedar Grove, and then attended Craft Business College in Durham.

Fran began her business career in 1951 when she was hired by Hospital Care Association, which later became Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. In 2001 she became only the tenth employee in the entire Blue Cross Blue Shield System nationwide to achieve 50 or more years of service.

A quiet demeanor; always nicely dressed; with a pleasant smiling face; who had that very approachable look; would describe Fran’s appearance. Outstanding; dedicated; integrity; would be the only way to describe Fran’s performance at Blue Cross Blue Shield and in service to the many volunteer organizations she worked with over the years.

While she was very dedicated to her job at Blue Cross Blue Shield, she was also very dedicated to volunteer work. Her husband being an active Shriner, Fran became active in the Shrinettes.

In 1977 Fran became one of the first women to join the formally all male civic organization Civitan. In Civitan over the years she received 31 awards for her efforts including Civitan Honor Keys on the local club, district and international levels. In 1997 Fran was presented the North Carolina District East Lifetime Achievement Award which requires 20 or more years of active participation in Civitan and community activities.

Fran was also an active volunteer for the Durham County Mental Health Association, North Carolina Special Olympics, CROP walks and especially with her Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Fran is survived by a special sister-like cousin who was reared by her parents, Katherine Ayscue, of Butner. There are also several nephews, nieces and cousins who survive.
