Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Losi Sherwood
June 28, 1949-November 30, 2024
Betty, our loving grandmother, mother, aunt, sister, sister-in-law, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2024, surrounded by love at her daughter’s home in North Carolina.
Betty was born June 28, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY to Edward James Losi and Agnes (Pessutti) Losi. She attended The Ursuline School in New Rochelle, NY. She started her college career at Duquesne University and finished her BA at Iona College, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
She lived all over the country, making lifetime friends wherever she went. She began her professional work in Human Resources for General Foods, and retired from a 16-year career at Cadbury-Schweppes. Moving to Florida in 1996, she took up bartending. She truly loved it, and made a mean Bloody Mary. After her bartending career, she worked as a caregiver. Her generous heart was treasured by the families of loved ones under her care.
Betty was a lifelong volunteer for multiple organizations, from the Red Cross to various animal rescue and support groups. Having received many awards for horseback riding while growing up, she used her equine expertise to provide therapeutic riding to special needs children and adults through Special Equestrians of the Treasure Coast.
Upon leaving Vero Beach she headed north to Jacksonville to fulfill a lifelong ambition of building her dream home; a log cabin in the woods, or in her case, the palm trees. She was ecstatic at its completion.
She is survived by her former husband, Stephen Sherwood with whom she had 2 daughters. Lauren Sherwood (55) and Megan Sherwood Pollard, (50) married to Coleman Pollard. Her daughters and grandchildren were the lights of her life - Cole (21), Catherine, and Julia (19) and grand fur babies Sunny and Tig, who she spoiled as well.
Three siblings, Kathleen Losi Fowler (Greg Fowler) James Garret Losi (Beverly Nugent Losi), and MaryBeth Losi-Gowdey will greatly miss her spunky demeanor, as will her nieces and nephews, Kenneth Siconolfi (Claire), Jim Losi Jr., Brian Losi (deceased), Caitlin Losi Reynolds (Reggie), Drew Gowdey (Morgan Rae), Morgan Gowdey (Luke Ware), and Griffin Gowdey (Jess Perez). Three great grandnephews, Lukas Losi, Colby Gowdey, and Chase Gowdey will miss ‘The Turkey Fairy’, who sent Advent Calendars to “the kids” every Thanksgiving, no matter how old or where they lived.
Family and friends will miss her vibrant, sometimes irreverent spirit, her passion for felines, John Denver, and log cabins, her tenacious approach to projects, and her enthusiastic love of family and traditions.
Betty will be cremated at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service & Cremation in Durham, NC. A Celebration of Life will be planned for early 2025 in Vero Beach, FL and a northern location to be determined. In remembrance of Betty, please consider donating to Special Equestrians of the Treasure Coast Inc. 7065 37th St. Vero Beach, FL 32966, and/or, Friends of Jacksonville Animals, Inc. c/o ACPS, 2020 Forest Street, Jacksonville FL 32204.
