CHAPEL HILL -Edwina (Winee) Brown, 87, passed away in Chapel Hill, NC on January 9, 2015 after over a decade of struggling with Alzheimer???s disease. She was born in Summit, NJ to Edwina K. Leathem and John C. Leathem. She graduated high school from Kent Place School and majored in Chemistry at Cornell Uneersity aneerskine College. While attending graduate school in chemistry at Rutgers Uneersity is when she met her future husband William E. Brown. After their marriage, she worked as a researcher scientist at Ciba and Squibb until the children arrived. While raising her children, Winee kept active as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Richardson, TX and was consistently involved with the community with work on library programs, candy-striper programs, Camp Fire Girls leadership in addition to managing the logistics of children???s school aneextracurricular activities. After her last child entered school, Winee re-enrolled in graduate classes aneearned a Masters Degree in Environmental Science from the Uneersity of Texas. Winee joined Bill in a company he ran that focused on environmentally safe disposal of waste products from a number of industries. She also undertook contract work for the EPA and worked at Arco Laboratories. Winee and Bill enjoyed visiting family, business colleagues and friends domestically and internationally as well as spending time in their Florida and Colorado homes. Winee enthusiastically supported her children, grandchildren and other friends in pursuing their talents and aspirations. Her contributions also furthered a number of environmental causes. She loved gardening and outdoor activities, any type of learnineexperience and socializing. She was the foundation of loving support for her family, friends and colleagues. Winee is survived by her children Edwina M. Nelon, Karen L. Brian, Gregory W. Brown and grandchildren, Molly Daniel, George E. Brian III, Cameron K. Brown and Zachary E. Brown. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 65 years, William E. Brown. A graveside service will be held 3:00pm Tuesday, January 13, 2015 in Chapel Hill Cemetery.
