Dr. Lawrence W. Moore, Jr.

DURHAM Dr. Lawrence W. Moore Jr. retired ophthalmologist, died February 21, 2014 at age 75. Born and raised in Blacksburg, VA, he graduated from Virginia Tech, Duke Medical School, and completed a surgical internship at Colorado General Hospital. Dr. Moore theneerved three years in the Public Health Service. After a residency in ophthalmology at UNC/McPherson Hospital, he was a Heed Fellow specializing in corneal transplant surgery. Dr. Moore trained many residents, both at UNC and Duke. He was acting Chairman of Ophthalmology at UNC, Chairman at neeye, Ear, nee &Throat, and the first Chief of Staff at NC Specialty Hospital. He retired in 2006 after forty years of medical practice. He was a talented artist and musician, a gourmet cook, and an avid gardener with a special interest in growing orchids. Dr. Moore is survived by his wife of fifty years, Minee L. Moore, their two daughters, Kathryn E. Moore and Marianne S. Moore, Kathryn's daughter Rowan E. Gossett, Marianne's daughter Lena M. Moore-Mancuso, son-in-law Paul M. Mancuso, and brother Dr. Jack F. Flanagan. A memorial service will be held at Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St. Chapel Hill at 2:00pm on Saturday March 8th.
