Dr. James Hopkins Carpenter

Durham, NC ??? Dr. James Hopkins Carpenter, 74, died at his home on March 2, 2017. Dr. Carpenter was born on June 17, 1942 in Syracuse, NY, to the late James Hawthorne and Lucy Hopkins Carpenter. He graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy and LeMoyne College. Dr. Carpenter received his DDS from the Georgetown Uneersity School of Dentistry, after which he served in the US Army. He returned to Syracuse, where he was in private practice for 45 years. Dr. Carpenter was a member of the Fifth District Dental Society and the Onondaga County Dental Society. He served on the Westhill Central School District Board of Education for 9 years. Dr. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Mary Ponticello Carpenter; sons, David James Carpenter of New York, NY, John Michael Carpenter, and his wife, Colleen, of Durham, NC; daughter, Julie C. Carpenter of St. Louis, MO; grandchildreneelyn and Nolan Carpenter; sister, Judy Carpenter, of Syracuse, NY, and several cousins. Calling hours and memorial service will be held at The Church of St. Michael and St. Peter on Thursday, March 9, 4-7 pm. The funeral mass will be Friday, March 10, at 10 am at the church.
