Dr. H. Max Schiebel

Dr. H. Max Schiebel died on June 4, 2007. He was born January 18, 1909, in Baltimore, MD, to Elizabeth Schmiedicki and Max Schiebel, both natives of Germany. He was educated in a two-room school ineennsylvania, graduated from Johns Hopkins Uneersity and Johns Hopkins Uneersity School of Medicine. He completed his residency ineeneral and thoracic surgery at Duke Uneersity Hospital in 1939 after which he entered practice in Durham. During more than 50 years practicing medicine, he was associated with Duke, Watts, Durham Regional, Lincoln, and Dorothea Dix Hospitals. At one time he served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Watts, Lincoln and Dorothea Dix Hospitals. He was instrumental ineetting approval for the surgical residency program at Lincoln Hospital. For more than 50 years, he served as a surgical consultant for Blue Cross Blue Shield and was active on the local, state, and national boards of the American Cancer Society.
