Dr. Burrell Edmond Kanoy, Sr.

Dr. Burrell Edmond Kanoy, Sr., 84, a Durham resident of 67 years, died December 6, 2010 at the Brianeenter in Durham. He was born May 23, 1926 in Biscoe, NC and was the son of the late Ethel Cornelia Drake and Robert Carson Kanoy, Sr. Dr. Kanoy is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ann Lominac Kanoy and three sons; Dr. Burrell Edmund Kanoy, Jr., Kenneth Drake Kanoy and Michael Brooks Kanoy, all of Durham; three granddaughters, Leah Carson Kanoy, a recent graduate of Florida School of Law, Moriah Elizabeth Kanoy Smith, Arts teacher in Clemson, SC and Jenni Katherine Kanoy Allen, teacher at Durham Trinity High School; one grandson, Christopher Michael Kanoy, a senior at Elon Uneersity; and one nephew Dr. RC Kanoy, III, of Durham. Ed was preceded ineeath by one older brother, Robert Carson Kanoy, Jr. and his wife Betsy Fields. Ed was active in school, scouting, and marching bands, including driving the school bus. During his summers, he ran the little gas station in Biscoe. He was presented the Eagle Scout award at Biscoe Baptist Church and was a member of both marching bands at Biscoe High School and Wake Forest College. He was chosen for membership in the National High School Beta Club at Biscoe High School and OKU of the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. At age 17, Ed voluneered for the Navy Medical Corp, serving from 1942 to 1944. In 1945 he returned to Wake Forest College. He graduated from Biscoe High School in 1942, Wake Forest College in 1949 and the Medical College of Virginia, School of Dentistry in 1953. In 1948 Ed was married in Asheville, NC to Aneelizabeth Lominac, a classmate. That fall he was enrolled in the dental school of Medical College of VA Commonwealth, Richmond, VA. He was president of the Durham-Orange County Dental Society and the Durham County unit of the American Cancer Society. Also a committeeman of Troop 499 Boy Scouts of America and a member of the Americaneeart Association and the Lions Club. A faithful member of First Baptist Church since 1948, Dr. Kanoy served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher; served on many committees including Mission, Finance, Pastor Search Committee and the Body of Deacons throughout the years. His Lord, his family and Missions were his greatest loves. Over some 25 years he, with Ann, served others around the world through dentistry, often with the missionaries serving as translators. Ed's greatest joy was using dentistry through the Foreign Mission Board, NC Baptist Men, International Mission Board and First Baptist Church to lead others to Christ. Following retirement from private practice in 1991, Ed was appointed the rank of Clinical Instructor in the Department of Dental Ecology School of Dentistry UNC Chapel Hill, upon approval by the Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs. He served through 1999 when dialysis became neessary. Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday December 9, 2010 from First Baptist Church, 414 Cleveland Street in Durham with the Rev. Dr. Aneew Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Biscoe Cemetery, Biscoe, NC with Dr. Charles Herbst officiating. Friends may visit Thursday from 9:30 -10:30 AM prior to the service in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the North Carolina Baptist Men, P.O.
