Doris Mccullough Whitfield

Doris McCullough Whitfield, age 91, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday morning, September 22nd, 2021. She was born on December 3, 1929 to the late H. W. (Mac) McCullough and Eva Patton McCullough.

Doris was born in Albany, Georgia, and lived her life in Charlotte, Spartanburg, Columbia, and Durham.  She attended Durham High School where she met her late husband, Ralph F. (Buddy) Whitfield, Jr.  She attended Duke University and worked early in her career at the VA Hospital in Durham.  After raising her family, she worked as a florist at Duvall-Hackett as well as Floral Dimensions.  Doris was an accomplished dancer in her younger years and loved to dance throughout her life.  She enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, and most especially her long list of friends.  She never met a stranger and always loved for friends and neighbors to come by.

Doris is survived by her son, Ralph F. Whitfield III and wife Lisa Parker Whitfield, her son David P. Whitfield of Suwanee, Georgia, and daughter, Jan Whitfield of Nashville, Tennessee.  Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Whitfield and her infant sister, Deloris.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise Brighton Gardens in Raleigh for the love and exceptional care they provided our mother over these past few years.  We would also like to thank the wonderful medical team at Eventus Whole Health as well as the physical, speech, and occupational therapists that have assisted our mother in recent years. 

A visitation will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home on Tuesday September 28^th.  All are welcome.  A private burial will occur on Wednesday, September 29th at Maplewood Cemetery.
