Dateline: Chapel Hill Deceased: Donald Wallace Sparrow, Sr. Donald Wallace Sparrow, Sr., age 84 of 721 Hillsborough Street died Thursday, July 14, 2011, at his home. He was born, raised and lived his entire life in Chapel Hill, and was the son of the late Fred Albert and Sally Smith Sparrow. Don was the greatest of all Tar Heel fans and loved watching any UNC sportineevent. He was the owner and partner of Don's Masonry for more than 35 years and over a 60-year career, built many homes and commercial buildings in the Durham-Chapel Hill area. He served his country in the Army Air Corps from 1946-1949. Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Carolyn Pressley Sparrow, formerly of Asheville; sons, Donald W. Sparrow Jr. and wife Kalla of Arnold, MD, Russell C. Sparrow and wife Lisa, David P. Sparrow and wife Stephanie, Richard C. Sparrow and friend Theresa Brent, aneedward E. Sparrow, all of Chapel Hill; brothers Fred A. Sparrow, Jr. of Hillsborough and George Thomas Sparrow of Graham; sisters Eve Sparrow Bradshaw of Graham and Patricia Thompson of Raleigh; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and special family friends Ann Lord Sparrow and Kathy Nixon Sparrow. He will also be missed by a multitude of extended family and friends throughout the Chapel Hill area. Don was preceded ineeath by sisters Mary Frances Klukas and Lois Prostak, and brother Wayne M. Sparrow. Funeral services will be conducted July 17, 2011, at 3 PM, at Amity Uneed Methodist Church. Following the service, burial will be in the Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM, on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be Keith Klukas, Tim Pressley, Mark Pressley, Billy Pressley, Bob Sparrow and Chris Sparrow. Honorary pallbearers are Greg Isenhour, Dan Fritz, Mike Lewis, John Crumpton, Paul Horwhat, Robert Parks and Bob Durham. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Duke Hospice, 4321 Medical Park Dr., Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.
