Dewey Wilmont Chapple, Jr., 90, of Raleigh, NC joined his Lord and Savior peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2025.
He was born on September 28, 1934 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Dewey Wilmont Chapple, Sr. and late Alma Charles Chapple. Preceding him in death was his sister, Sally Ann Williams, and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Betty Ann Chapple; two daughters: Stephanie Elizabeth Austin (Steve) of Raleigh, NC and Katharine Anne Tate (Skip) of Annapolis, MD; and four grandchildren: Anne Weber (Elijah) of Richmond, VA, Spencer Tate of San Francisco, CA, Abigail Austin of Wilmington, NC, and Emily Austin of Raleigh, NC.
Dewey graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and was a 1956 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He enjoyed his years in Chapel Hill as a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity and the Marching Band. He also played in the North Carolina Harold Nall Orchestra to entertain service members and their families at Fort Bragg.
Dewey served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis as a Sergeant First Class at Fort Bragg.
Dewey’s professional career included positions in the financial industry beginning at Wachovia Bank and Trust Company and The Northwestern Bank. He later founded and served as President and CEO of Forsyth Savings and Loan Corporation. Dewey’s entrepreneurial accomplishments also included starting several mortgage and financial ventures. Dewey was a consultant for the Resolution Trust Corporation, working at TrustBank Federal Savings Bank in Falls Church, VA. During this time, he spent weekends in Washington, DC exploring our nation’s history with family and friends.
Dewey’s professional memberships included serving as President, American Institute of Banking; Chairman, NC March of Dimes; and President, Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club. His civic presidencies, chairmanships, and directorships included the Winston-Salem Jaycees; Alcoholic Beverage Control; The Greater Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce; The NC Eye and Human Tissue Bank; and Forsyth County Economic Development Corporation. Early in his career, he received the Winston Salem Distinguished Service Award as Young Man of the Year.
Dewey was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, The Rams Club, and Forsyth Country Club. His favorite annual tradition was playing the trumpet with the Ardmore Moravian Band for the Easter Sunrise Service at God’s Acre in Old Salem.
Some of Dewey and Betty Ann’s happiest times were spent in Washington, DC, Annapolis, MD, the mountains of North Carolina, and the beach. Dewey’s greatest joy was being a grandfather. He was a loyal Tar Heel and looked forward to Carolina football and basketball games with every new season.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Community Room.
A graveside service at Salem Cemetery in Old Salem will follow at a later date for immediate family.
Dewey will be remembered for his gentle smile, kind heart, and giving spirit. He will be dearly missed.
