(Bahama, NC) – Dao Nguyen, age 73, died in Durham, NC on 5/23/2024. He was born in Vietnam on 2/6/1951 to the late Nguyen Van Han and Nguyen Thi Gai.
He served as an officer in the Vietnamese military, defending his country, something he was very passionate about. On 9/26/1989. Dao left his homeland, escaping on a fishing boat by night with his family and 63 additional family and other refugees, in hopes of looking for a better future. After one week on the rough seas, fighting hunger, dehydration, and scorching weather, he found refuge in the Philippines. After five years living in several refugee camps, he was able to migrate his family to America on December 7, 1994 to Chicago, IL. Dao worked hard to support his family, gaining citizenship, and seeing his children graduating through school. He had a passion for writing Vietnamese poetry and spending time with his wife and family.
Dao is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phung Nguyen and children, Nguyet (Vu) of Texas, Yen (Vinh) of NC, Giang (Hanh) of NC, Ha (Annie) of CA, grandchildren, Minh-Thu, Phong, Nhu-Y, Thien, Kim, Mai, Dexter, Riley, brothers and sister Nguyen Thi Rieng (Vietnam), Nguyen Huu Chinh (TX), Nguyen Thuy On (TX/Vietnam), and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. Dao was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Nguyen Thinh Cuong, Nguyen Thi Na, Nguyen Van Chung, Nguyen Thi Muoi.
Visitation will be Tuesday, 5/28/2024 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, 5/29/2024 at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Dao will be laid to rest at St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery following the service.
