Daniel Francis Gourley

Daniel Danny Francis Gourley, 60, passed away peacefully oneednesday, April 30, 2014, at his home in Durham, N.C. He was born to Richardine and the late William Gourley on neember 6, 1953, in Charleston, S.C. He graduated from St. Aneew's High School and attended the College of Charleston on a golf scholarship. Danny spent most of his career working as a golf professional, teaching on Hiltoneead Island and at the Peninsula Club in Cornelius, N.C. He also ran his own golf school in Sarasota, Fla., and worked at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, S.C and most recently at UNC Finley Golf Course. Danny brought comfort to people in so many different ways. Whether it was via his sense of humor, a bowl of his 5-star shrimp stew, a genee act of kineess, his chatter on the golf course or his courage, Danny made you feel good wheneer you were in his presence. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Rita A. Balaban of Durham, N.C.; his mother Richardine Jenkins Gourley of Charleston, S.C.; his children Sarah Jane Gourley of Columbia, S.C., Daniel Francis Gourley II of Columbia, S.C., and Robert Jackson Gourley of Concord, N.C.; his brother William Gale Gourley wife Janis of Jacksonville, NC; and his mother-in-law, neerous sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, unees, cousins and friends. Danny's family is genuinely grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Uneersity of North Carolina Cancer Hospital and UNC Hospice for the care and comfort that he received. A memorial service will be held for his family and friends on May 18 at 6 p.m. at the UNC Finley Golf Course. Interment will be in Charleston.
