Coral W. Washington Oxford Coral W. Washington, 90, of Oxford, died September 30, 2011, after an extended illness with Parkinson's disease. A native of Oxford, she was the first child born at Brantwood Hospital, and was the daughter of Royster and Grey Yancey Wiggins. She received a B.A. in English from the George Peabody College for Teachers, now part of Vanderbilt Uneersity, and a Masters degree in Library Science from UNC-Chapel Hill. She was preceded ineeath by Sherrill F. Washington, her husband of 53 years. She taught at Stem High School, was librarian at Oxford Orphanee and the first librarian at J.F. Webb High School, where she worked for approximately twenty years and consolidated several community high school libraries into one collection. She was a member of the Oxford Woman's Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Granville County Historical Society and long-time member of Oxford Baptist Church. She loved her family, flowers, and to entertain friends with dinner parties and other events. She was an avid bridge player, and was known for her caramel and coconut cakes. Survivors include two sons, Royster and wife, Isabel, of Oxford; Herbert and wife, Gail, of Henderson; two grandchildren: Yancey Washington and wife, Mary Kathryn of Oxford; and Fairley Mahlum and husband, David of Raleigh; two great-grandchildren: James Yancey Washington, Jr., and Anneel Grey Mahlum, and two first cousins: Thornton H. Yancey and wife, Lynn of Oxford; and L. Clement Yancey of Oxford. The family would like to express a very special thank you to Willia Jean Richards, Helen Grey, Emily Peace, Regina Bowden, Angela Bullock, Carolyn Campbell, Mildred Harris and Martha Hawkins for their compassionee and supportive care during Coral's illness. The family also thanks the staff of AMEDISYS Hospice Services 3320 U.S. 1 HWY Suite B, Franklinton, N.C., for their loving care, and Lewis Cooper for his hard work and dependability. The family will receive friends from 4:00 6 00 p.m. at the home this Saturday. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. this Sunday. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Oxford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oxford Baptist Church or the Christen Foundation AMEDISYS Hospice 3320 U.S HWY 1 Suite B, Franklinton, N.C.
