Clarence “Tray” Boone III, 49, passed away at Duke Regional Hospital on March 17, 2025. He was a man of many passions, known for his adventurous spirit and offbeat sense of humor.
Tray graduated from Manteo High School on Roanoke Island and was an Eagle Scout, an achievement that reflected his love for the outdoors and his dedication to lifelong learning. He was a Dive Master and had a passion for diving, finding both adventure and peace beneath the water’s surface. His curiosity and enthusiasm for new experiences led him to travel extensively, exploring new places and cultures. He also had a talent for barbecue, perfecting his craft over the years and sharing his creations with friends and family. As a proud Mason, he valued tradition, brotherhood, and service.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon McDonald, and stepfather, Rodney McDonald. He is survived by his father, Clarence “Butch” Boone; his brother, Brandon Riley Boone; his nephews, Zachary and Cole; his stepmother, Linda H. McCown, and her husband, Alfred L. Jackson; his sisters, Kristen Vick McCown, her husband, Tittu Nellimoottil, and their sons, Leon and Hugo, and Brittanie Cameron Boone Gracey, her husband Brian E. Gracey, and their sons, Nolan and Wesley. He is also remembered by his best friend and fellow Eagle Scout, Adam Martin, and Adam’s wife, Jenny Martin, along with many extended family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on March 25, 2025, in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, with visitation beginning an hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tray’s honor to The Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, a cause that was important to him.
