Christene Jo Hitchcock

September 5, 1953 — January 20, 2025

Durham, NC

Christene (Christie) Jo Hitchcock, age 71, passed away suddenly on January 22, 2025. She was born September 5, 1953 in Chillicothe, OH to Anthony and Patricia Hitchcock. She grew up in Oak Ridge, TN until the age of 13 when her family moved to Durham, NC. She fell in love with music and became a talented clarinetist, graduating from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1975 with her Bachelors in Music and receiving her Masters in Music from Boston University in 1977. Christie performed as a classical musician in Boston and Salt Lake City before returning to Durham, where she worked in the organic product regulatory industry until her retirement in 2023. In 1992, she welcomed her son Matt Hitchcock into the world.

Christie was a loving mother and dedicated community member, most recently serving as a Vestry member at All Saints Church. She was always eager to volunteer, whether at Matt’s school, through church activities, or by training one of her dogs to be a therapy dog and visiting patients in local hospitals. Christie cherished her family and friends, always striving to make others feel comfortable. A passionate UNC and local sports fan, she also enjoyed reading, classical music, researching family ancestry, and quality time with loved ones.

Christie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Matt Hitchcock and Sukie Emerson; her brothers, Bill Hitchcock and Mike Hitchcock, and Mike's wife Kathy Hitchcock; and by her stepmother, Nancy Hitchcock. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to All Saints Church, Animal Protection Society of Durham, or The Classical Station - WCPE.
