Carlos Lozoya Monarrez, 84, died peacefully with family by his side in Durham, NC, on April 24. He was born on December 28, 1938, in Magistral del Oro, Mexico, to the late Elvira Lozoya and Enrique Monarrez.
After moving to the U.S. from Mexico at age 21, Carlos served in the United States Army as a corporal and medic stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He graduated with an Associate’s degree from Los Angeles Trade Technical College and worked as an electronic technician for the Postal Service in Los Angeles for 32 years. He loved to tell stories about his Army days, all the interesting people he worked with at the post office, and he especially loved to talk about his close-knit family and how he spent his youth in Magistral.
In his retirement, Carlos enjoyed golfing, spending time with his local family and friends, and visiting his son’s family in Michigan as well as his large extended family and friends in California, Arizona, Colorado, and Mexico. He enjoyed traveling around his adopted country and abroad with Magdalena (Nena), his loving wife of 55 years. He was grateful to have visited many of the foreign countries that he had read about as a child. He was an avid reader, did the crossword puzzle daily and taught himself to do many things throughout his life.
Carlos is survived by his wife, Magdalena, his daughter Cynthia (Monarrez) Larrick, her husband, Rick, of Chapel Hill, and grandchildren Caroline and Kika; his son, Carlos, and wife, Janice, of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, and granddaughters Audrey and Sophie. He is also survived by his brothers Guillermo (Angeles) Santillan, Salvador (Leticia) Santillan, Horacio (Guadalupe) Lozoya, Francisco (Lourdes) Solis, Oscar Solis, and Miguel Solis and by many loving nephews and nieces, cousins, aunts and an uncle.
Carlos was preceded in death by his grandmother, Delfina Lozoya Lucero, his mother, Elvira, his father, Enrique, his brother Mario Monarrez, and sisters-in-law Gregoria Solis and Lilia Solis.
