Betty Jean Egerton Pickett, age 87, passed away peacefully September 4 at her home.
A native of Warrenton, NC, Betty was the daughter of the late Gilbert Grey Egerton and Ida Mae King Egerton.
Betty graduated from Watts School of Nursing. Betty worked as a registered nurse at Watts Hospital, Duke Hospital, Hillhaven Nursing Home, EPA and NIEHS until her retirement in 2000. Betty was an active member of Yates Baptist Church and enjoyed serving on numerous committees and actively participating in Bible study, Sunday school and worship. Betty loved working in her flower beds - especially her rose garden and numerous iris beds. She loved her many trips to Emerald Isle, long walks on the beach and searching for seashells. Betty enjoyed working in the enormous vegetable garden that she and Cary planted each year. She canned, froze and shared with friends the bounty of each harvest.
Betty was married to the late Cary Newton Pickett for 56 years. She is survived by her two daughters: Dawn Brown and her husband, Scott, of Wake Forest and Tracy Pickett of Durham. Betty’s two grandchildren are Matthew Cary Brown and Lauren Elizabeth Brown.
