Barbara Jean Hyland

DURHAM – Barbara J. Hyland (Bonnie), age 77, died March 10, 2023 at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. She was born March 19, 1945 to the late Maurice F. Mullane and Elizabeth H. Mullane.

Bonnie was born in Syracuse, New York and attended PS 22 in Flushing (Queens), New York. She graduated from St. Paul’s High School in 1962 (Scranton, Pennsylvania) and from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1965 (Carbondale, Pennsylvania). While attending nursing school, Bonnie took classes at both Marywood College (Dunmore, Pennsylvania) and the University of Scranton.

After graduation, Bonnie was employed as a registered nurse by Mercy Hospital and by the Visiting Nurse Association, both in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She and Gerard J. Hyland, Jr. were married in St. Clare (Scranton, Pennsylvania) March 9, 1968. After their children were in college, Bonnie began working for York Hospital (York, Pennsylvania) in 1991 and retired from there in 2002.

Bonnie is survived by her husband, Gerard J. Hyland, Jr., her son, Gerard J. Hyland, III, her daughter, Elizabeth A. Hyland (David Carlin), and her younger brother Maurice T. Mullane. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice F. and Elizabeth H. Mullane, and by her youngest brother, Gerald F. Mullane (Amanda).

A private funeral mass is being held at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Durham, North Carolina.
