Ann Elizabeth Lominac Kanoy, widow of Dr. Burrell Edmond Kanoy, Sr., died in Durham, NC on March 11, 2024, at the age of 96. A native of Buncombe County, NC, Mrs. Kanoy was born on January 10, 1928, to the late Richmond Carl and Jessie Ada Phillips Lominac.
She is survived by her three sons, Dr. Burrell Edmond Kanoy, Jr. (Dr. Laura Parra) of Durham, NC, Kenneth Drake Kanoy (Barbara) of Durham, NC and Michael Brooks Kanoy of Apex, NC. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Leah Frahm (Chris) of Raleigh, NC, Moriah Smith (Josh) of Charleston SC, Jenni Allen (Josh) of Charlotte, NC, Christopher Kanoy (Lauren) of Atlanta, GA and seven great grandchildren.
Ms. Kanoy has two surviving siblings, Dorris L. Sherman of Gastonia, NC and Rex C. Lominac (Judy) of Concord, NC. In addition to her parents and her husband of 62 years, she is predeceased by her sisters, Marie Louise Lominac, Freida May Penland, Lois Yvonne Amico and her brother, Harold Richmond Lominac.
Mrs. Kanoy graduated from Mars Hill College in 1946 and Wake Forest College in 1948. While at Wake Forest, she met Burrell Edmond Kanoy, a classmate. They were married in Asheville, NC on August 14, 1948. Early in the marriage, she taught school sciences in Richmond, VA and Durham, NC. She later assisted her husband in his dental practice.
She and Ed joined the First Baptist Church of Durham, NC in 1948 and were faithful members until his death in 2010. Both served on numerous committees and held various church offices. For 25 years, they volunteered to serve others around the world through the Medical/Dental team of the North Carolina Baptist Men and the Foreign Mission Board.
Mrs. Kanoy delighted in spending time daily with her four grandchildren while they were of preschool age as both sets of parents worked full-time. She continued to be their special “Honey” as they grew older and she maintained that close relationship with them as they grew, married and nurtured families of their own.
For Mrs. Kanoy, her Lord, her family and mission trips with her husband were her greatest loves.
A graveside service will be held at the Biscoe, NC cemetery on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Kanoy requested that contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Durham, NC for its foreign mission programs.
