Beulah Mary Latta passed away on May 1, 2022, at 100 years old. She was born on July 4, 1921, in Durham County to Philip Alston and Martha Terry Latta. Beulah attended school in Durham County. After graduating from Wiley P. Mangum High School in 1938, she graduated from Croft Business College in 1939.
Beulah began her service and employment with the Social Security Administration in Washington, DC in May 1941. She continued with several different Social Security assignments until retirement. In addition to Washington, DC, she had assignments in Rocky Mount, NC and Hickory, NC, before returning to Durham in 1947. Her Durham assignment as a Field Representative, included Durham, Orange, Person, and Granville counties until her retirement in September of 1986.
Beulah transferred her membership from Foundry Methodist Church in Washington, DC to Duke Memorial United Methodist Church in Durham, NC in February 1951. She served faithfully at Duke Memorial where she was active in Sunday School, United Methodist Women, Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, and other volunteer positions.
In addition to serving at Duke Memorial, Beulah has been an active member of Chapter 566 of the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees since her retirement in 1986, where she served as Secretary, President of Membership, and Service Officer and the Newsletter Committee. Beulah served Meals on Wheels from January 1987 until December 2020. She also served as a volunteer counselor with SHIP from January 1987 until October 2006. SHIP, the Senior Health Insurance Program, a division of the North Carolina Insurance Commission was able to benefit from her vast Social Security knowledge during its beginning.
Beulah moved to Croasdaile Village in November 2010, where she served on several committees.
